Hydration:
August 21st, 2008
It's that time of year when the weather is hot and the humidity is down. Be sure to drink plenty of water to allow your body to function properly.

Fire Season is Near:
April 20th, 2008
Fire season is rapidly approaching. If you live in a rural area, please remember to give firefighters a defensible space by clearing your property and keep brush 100 feet from all structures.

Gardening Dangers:
April 2nd, 2008
During your spring gardening, be aware of critters that like to live in your yard.
Stinging insects like bees and wasps can inflict a painful wallup.
Black widows and brown recluse spiders can put you out of commission for several days and can be fatal in extreme cases.
Wear gloves and watch where you put your hands and arms while working in the yard.
If you are bitten, stung or otherwise injured, always error on the side of caution and call 911.

Don't Drink and Drive!:
December 17th, 2007
Please be aware of your safety and the safety of others during this holiday season. Don't drink and drive!

Cold Weather:
December 11th, 2007
Just a reminder to keep an extra blanket in your car's emergency kit. Too many stories about people getting stranded on the road without adequate supplies to survive overnight in the cold.

Fire Storms of '07:
November 7th, 2007
Just got back from 15 days on a strike team from Malibu to SanDiego, fighting fire all along the way.
If you live in a rural area, I can't stress enough, the importance of completing your brush clearance at least 100 feet from all structures on your property.
As I mentioned in an earlier blog, keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle can prove to be invaluable in case you need to evacuate.
I saw a lot of devastation in the past two weeks, but I also saw many happy endings and examples of the best of humanity.
Always be prepared for the worst and hope for the best!

Emergency Preparedness Kits:
October 15th, 2007
It is wise to be as prepared for an emergency as you can be.
Keeping an emergency kit in your home in case of earthquake, flood, or other disaster can help you get through the event more comfortably and better informed. It is also wise to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you are away from home when a disaster strikes.
Some items that should be included in your emergency kit are;
1. Enough food and water for several days.
2. A change of clothes for each member of the family.
3. A battery powered radio or TV.
4. Toilet paper.
5. Tools.
The Red Cross' website has a detailed list of items that are recommended for an emergency kit.

Today is Nice:
October 9th, 2007
Today is a nice day. Emergency Response CPR.

Stroke Indicators:
September 4th, 2007
The Cincinnati Fire Department came up with a quick and easy three question test to help determine if someone is having a stroke.
If you suspect that someone is having a stroke, ask these three questions:
1. Can you raise both hands above your head?
2. Can you speak a simple sentence? (like, "How are you?)
3. Can you smile or, show me your teeth?
If the patient can't do these three things, there is about a 85% chance that they are having a stoke. Call 911 right away!

New Addition:
August 30th, 2007
We have a new addition to the Emergency Response CPR family!
My wife delivered a healthy baby boy, 8lbs and 19 1/2 inches.
Things are busy around here. Teaching a lot of youth football coaches, getting them ready for the upcoming season, focusing on hea related emergncies, concusions, and splinting broken bones.
Stay safe out there!

Heat Related Injuries:
August 14th, 2007
This is the time of year when we need to be especially vigilant about the heat.
Be sure to drink plenty of water. Gatorade is good if you are exercising very hard in the heat but for general hydration, water is best. Gatorade and other sports drinks contain lots of sugar and calories which is great if you are very physically active outdoors but for the average person, it is not necessary. A good rule of thumb if you are drinking sports drinks is the 2 to 1 rule. For every 2 bottles of water, drink one bottle of Gatorade.
Make sure your kids are getting plenty of fluids. Watch them closely for heat exhaustion and if you see the symptoms, get them out of the heat and have them drink plenty of non caffeinated fluids.
Lastly, don't forget about your pets. Make sure they have plenty of water available and a cool, shady place to rest.
Stay cool!
